There is a moment in the year when the mountains stop feeling like an expectation and simply become themselves again. There are no lift queues, no high-season countdown. There are forests, silence, the smell of resin in the morning, and that sense of space that in peak weeks is hard to find.
Folgaria, in the heart of Alpe Cimbra, between Trentino and one of the largest and least crowded plateaus in the Alps, is exactly this: a place that rewards those who arrive when others are not thinking about it yet. Or are no longer thinking about it.
This article is for those looking for a mountain weekend that truly matters. Not the fixed August holiday or the February ski week. But the off-season weekend that later becomes the one you say changed the way you see the mountains.
The paradox of the low season: fewer tourists, more mountain
The mountains do not disappear out of season. You just see them better.
In the months between the major tourist waves – September, October, early April, some weekends in November – Alpe Cimbra transforms into something hard to describe if you haven’t experienced it: a territory that belongs entirely to you, with trails climbing up towards Sommo Alto without meeting a soul, with space and time that are rare in peak season.
Data confirms what off-season travellers have long understood: Italian mountain tourism is steadily growing in shoulder months too, with increasing interest in short stays and repeated weekend trips throughout the year. The classic “one ski week or nothing” model is changing, replaced by a more flexible and often more authentic approach.
Folgaria is perfectly suited to this way of travelling. Alpe Cimbra is open and active all year, and its offer changes radically month by month: it is not about doing the same thing in a smaller version, but discovering a place that is one thing in summer and something completely different in autumn or spring.
September and October: the golden season few people know
If there is an underrated season on Alpe Cimbra, it is autumn. September and October deliver what mountain lovers call “foliage”: the moment when forests of firs, beeches, and larches turn gold, orange, and rust red, creating a spectacle that rivals Northern Europe.
But foliage is only the frame. Inside, there is much more.
Trekking without crowds
The over 600 km of trails and dirt roads of Alpe Cimbra, accessible on foot and by mountain bike, are almost empty in autumn. You can climb up to Forte Belvedere Gschwent at your own pace. You can stop at Coe little lake without meeting anyone. You can walk the trail towards Hofentol waterfall in Guardia di Folgaria, especially spectacular after September rains, and then descend into the small “painted village” with murals on the house facades – a small open-air museum worth the trip on its own.
Seasonal flavours
Autumn on Alpe Cimbra is also the season of mushrooms, mountain huts, freshly aged Vezzena cheese, and game meat. The “Sapori d’Autunno” festival brings life to local restaurants with menus dedicated to regional products. Eating well, with zero-kilometre ingredients and traditional Cimbrian recipes, is easier in autumn than at any other time of year.
La Brava Part: a festival from another time
At the end of September, Folgaria hosts the “Grande Sfilata della Brava Part”, the most characteristic historical parade of the plateau: over six hundred participants in traditional costumes, carts, bands, choirs from Trentino, and animals. It is an event that tells the deep identity of this territory, and experiencing it outside the mainstream summer tourism is a privilege.
Spring: the mountains wake up, all for you
Spring on Alpe Cimbra arrives at its own pace. In April, the trails become walkable again, the snow retreats from the main routes, and the air still carries that freshness that has disappeared from the city for months. The forests smell of resin and wet earth, and the first mountain flowers begin to appear timidly across the meadows.
It is the perfect moment for those who love walking without schedules, for those who want to enjoy the area slowly. The CAI-SAT trails around Folgaria gradually reopen throughout the season, and by May, bikes once again take over the paths. The Sentiero dell’Acqua in Carbonare, which follows the Astico river through meadows, streams, and woods, is one of those routes that in spring takes on an almost magical dimension.
Also Base Tuono, the former 1960s NATO military base turned Cold War museum, with its intact Nike Hercules missiles, can be visited in complete calm, without summer queues.
Spring in the mountains is not an in-between season. It is the season when the mountains reclaim their space.
A weekend is a good start. Three or four days are even better.
Tourism data confirms a growing interest in short but frequent stays. People travel more often throughout the year, even just for two or three days, and discover that just a few days out of peak season are enough to come home feeling completely different.
Folgaria fits this rhythm perfectly: it is reachable in just over an hour from Trento and Rovereto, about two hours from Verona, Padua, and Venice, and under two and a half hours from Milan. It does not require expedition planning-you decide, you go, you arrive.
A weekend is the simplest format to start with, but those who arrive on Thursday evening and leave on Monday morning take home something more: time to settle in, to do more than one hike, to enjoy the SPA without watching the clock. Out of season, adding an extra day does not mean giving something up-it means gaining an entire extra dimension.
One extra day in the low season is worth twice as much as a day added in August.
The feature that changes everything: SPA and wellness in the heart of nature
There is one element that transforms a simple mountain weekend into something more complete: the possibility of true recovery. Not only through hiking, but with the body relaxing after hours of fresh air and elevation gain.
Camping Essenza Alpina, the only 4-star campsite with panoramic SPA in Alpe Cimbra, is designed exactly for this. You return from a hike, put your boots down, and in just a few steps you are in the Finnish sauna with mountain views. Or in the steam room. Or in the cold plunge pool, which after a day outdoors becomes a small ritual. The SPA is limited to a maximum of 25 people and open on weekends, so booking is recommended.
Out of season, this becomes even more true: the SPA follows its own rhythm, access is limited, and the atmosphere is just right. It is not mass wellness – it is authentic regeneration, with the same Nordic philosophy that makes the best spas in Central and Northern Europe so special.
The location helps: the campsite is in Francolini, with CAI-SAT trails directly nearby and the village of Folgaria just over a kilometre away. In spring and autumn, you can step out of your pitch and be on the trail within five minutes. This way of moving-slow, intentional, unhurried-finds its ideal base here.

November – March: the winter season
Folgaria in winter is a ski resort with over 100 km of slopes and the new Francolini-Sommo Alto cable car. But even here, choosing weekends in December (from December 8, before the Christmas rush) or midweek days in March (slopes are usually open until mid-month, and if snow conditions hold, sometimes until Easter–please check for updates, as the climate is variable) means skiing on less crowded slopes at more affordable prices. Camping Essenza Alpina is also open in this season, with a ski room, heated boot storage, and SPA for weekend recovery (Friday to Sunday). Camping in winter? It is much better than you imagine.
Folgaria also has the right recognition
It is not only about natural beauty. Alpe Cimbra is a GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council) certified destination for sustainable tourism. A certification that goes beyond marketing: it is based on strict standards in environmental management, local community involvement, and tourism quality.
The area is part of the Alpine Pearls network, which brings together Alpine destinations of excellence for sustainable mobility. And the Trentino Guest Card, available for guests staying in partner accommodations such as Camping Essenza Alpina, offers free access to museums, castles, forts, and local public transport.
All of this has extra value out of season: you experience the area with more time, less pressure, and greater awareness.
The weekend that stays with you
The mountains in the off-season are not “backup mountains”. They are a different way of being in the mountains: slower, more intimate, more truly yours. In Folgaria, on Alpe Cimbra, this way of travelling has everything it needs to truly work: a generous territory, a nature that changes with every season, and a structure like Camping Essenza Alpina, which considers comfort and wellbeing not as an extra luxury, but as an integral part of the experience.
The best mountain weekend is not the one in August. It is the one nobody expected-and the one you end up wanting to repeat.
